In 2067, Dr. Selene oversees the birth of Million, the one-millionth humanoid created from pure human DNA and progenitor stem cells aboard an advanced orbital station. The celebration reaches Earth, lunar colonies, Mars habitats, and asteroid mining stations — carried across the inhabited Solar System within the minutes that light itself costs. Then the frontier's hidden costs surface: the Lineborn — ALC laborers who work the mines; scare copy still says Bio-Monsters — begin to degrade physically and neurologically; Dr. Orion detects an unaccounted genetic marker in the progenitor stem cells; and biolab technician Sage finds the two are genetically linked. As Alexa Rykov and Commander Zephyr split the Council over profit, containment, transparency, and ethics — tracked live by public sentiment feeds from Mars to orbit — an independent task force is convened, and Million's caregivers Tara and Lune discover that the child at the center of the celebration is developing faster than any model can follow.

Born 17 February 2067 from pure human DNA and progenitor stem cells in a broadcast the whole inhabited system watches. His neural development outruns every model: learning modules advanced ahead of schedule, restlessness at the exact hours of distant crises, and — by Act II — an unprompted symbol drawn over and over: a closed loop with a break in it, then closed again. In the anthology's canon he is the Bridge: the point where the material world reaches toward the Soul layer.

Presides over Million's birth with the station's robotic surgical systems and announces him to the galaxy-wide broadcast. Behind the ceremony she trades encrypted warnings about keeping progenitor technology secure, and quietly compares notes with Captain Vega as the Lineborn / ALC crisis grows. In Act II she receives the first mine laborer ever brought to the orbital medical facility — same DNA library as the celebrated child, opposite social fate.

Works from an underground lab beneath a post-apocalyptic landscape — the custodian of the pure genetic material the whole future runs on. Detects the unaccounted genetic marker in the progenitor line, runs the worst-case simulations, and forces the Council to act. In Act II he testifies that the marker sat silent for twelve years and is now expressing — and admits he was the one who signed the original release.

Documents the degradation, finds the genetic similarity between a collapsed laborer and the progenitor stem cells, locks the unit down for the task force, and keeps air-gapped copies of the raw genomes in case the published numbers ever stop matching the real ones. His Act II discovery: the marker is germline. "It's not an accident that happened to him. It's an appointment."

In Act II she overlays Million's development curve on the laborers' degradation curve, sees the mirror — and chooses, for now, to protect the child from what the institutions would do with that knowledge.

The reflective half of the caregiving pair. "He is both the symbol and the subject of our greatest debates." It is Lune who first insists Million's benchmarks be compared against the task force's degradation feed.

The engineered lineage that works the mines beside autonomous machines — reinforced bodies, masked faces, collective communication. They call themselves Lineborn; NEF documents say ALC (Adapted Labor Cohort); scare copy still says Bio-Monsters. Now degrading, physically and neurologically, under a flaw written into their line from the beginning. In the shared canon they are the same lineage as Project L5's engineered people: one program, three registers, one disease at two stages.

Its independent task force — Earth Lab, Biolab, Mining, Independent Genetics, and Council Oversight seats — is chartered under transparency and containment clauses that are deliberately in conflict, and returns the verdict nobody wants: heritable, systemic, already loose.

They monitor, comply, and enforce directives; under the ratified charter the Council Chamber AI even refuses an order to scrub the record. Canonically ordinary systems: none of them is the Gamma Engine.

Public opinion is a battlefield in 2067, and they are the ones fighting on it.

The orbital station holds the story's institutions: the medical facility with its robotic surgical systems and quantum-lit theaters; the Council Chamber with its smart-material table and live sentiment walls; the Progenitor Lab, a nanobot-maintained vault under drone security; the Biolab with its enclosures, monitoring room, and isolated containment chamber; and Million's nursery, where a smart crib grows into a learning pod that adapts to his neural patterns.

Beyond orbit: the asteroid mining site (Captain Vega's spartan quarters, the drill area, the laborers' quarters — an ore economy of lunar regolith and towed near-Earth asteroids), the Mars colony (public squares, residential domes, and the holographic forum where public sentiment becomes politics), and the underground Earth lab, Dr. Orion's node of the pure-DNA network beneath a post-apocalyptic surface, linked to orbit by store-and-forward comms that carry a real light-lag. Every location speaks through its AI in the same clipped call-and-response — the sound of a managed frontier.

The Lineborn Crisis

Lineborn / ALC laborers begin to fail in the mines and biolabs — bone and neural systems degrading exactly where they were engineered hardest. Scare feeds still call them Bio-Monsters. Diagnostics recommend intervention; operational directives forbid it; monitoring continues. Then a unit collapses with critical systemic failure, and Sage's genome comparison lights the same marker region in the laborer and in the progenitor stem cells — the library every engineered body was built from. The degradation is not an anomaly. It is the disease's first act — the early clinical stage of the illness that, elsewhere in the same year, is collapsing a colony at L5.

Deep Lore — Spoilers Beyond This Point

The chain of custody leads somewhere ugly: Sage's air-gapped copy shows the marker was flagged years ago — and signed off as "within tolerance." The flaw was shipped knowingly.

The verdict is worse than a defect: the marker is heritable, systemic, and already loose in the entire engineered population. And Orion's private conclusion is the story's cruelest symmetry — the same edit that is killing the laborers is what makes Million exceptional. The flaw and the gift are one sequence, expressed in opposite directions.

Act II ends on two signals: Million awake at the exact hour a laborer dies, drawing his broken loop — and a store-and-forward transmission from a colony that has gone silent. L5. The bloomed form of the disease is already coming home.

Current Status

Launch package live: Act I ("Birth Week") and Act II ("The Task Force") are published reading doors on the site. Act III remains set up but unwritten — the public knows, the engineered population knows it is sick, and the signal from L5 promises the disease's mature form.
